The parliament of Canada has approved prolongation of fighting mission in Afghanistan up to 2011. Under condition of additional support of fighting operations in the south of this country from NATO allies.
Term of the Canadian mission in Afghanistan, according to law, expires in February 2009. Canadian government of conservatives presented in parliament by minority, has directed the offer on prolongation of mission in the beginning of February, 2008, together with inquiry about a vote of confidence to the government.
Thus, the disapproval of further military presence of Canada in Afghanistan threatened with dissolution of the government and carrying out of prescheduled parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile Canadian opposition complains, that military men of the country do not receive due support from coalition partners in southern province Kandahar, where resistance of movement “Taliban” is traditionally strong. Since 2001 nearby 2,5 thousand Canadian the soldier stay in Afghanistan, thus losses of a contingent have made already 80 person - only USA and the Great Britain have more victims.
The president of the USA Georges Bush has once again tried to convince the allies of NATO to send additional forces to Afghanistan. Formally all 26 members of the North Atlantic alliance are presented in this country, however, mostly military men from the USA, Canada, the Great Britain and the Netherlands serve on the advanced boundaries of southern Afghani provinces. Meanwhile Germany, France, Italy and Spain prefer to direct soldiers to quieter areas of the north and the West of the country.
The Afghani contingent of the USA is totaled with 29 thousand people in structure of a 40-thousand NATO coalition. In April, 2008, Pentagon is measured to send 3 thousand 200 sea infantrymen to Afghanistan.
